Do Bars Make Drinks With Diet Coke

Is it normal to order rum and diet coke at a bar?

I got a weird look from a waitress when I ordered this last night and had to repeat the order. I felt a bit self conscious. I'm in the US but I'm not from here, so I was wondering if this isn't a normal thing to order or if perhaps it has a name that I should have used.

Am I being a weird foreigner? Does anyone else get mixed drinks with diet soda at bars?

I don't think I've ever not ordered a diet mixer with alcohol before, on keto or off. Don't worry about it. Maybe she was having a bad day.

Thanks! Just needed an American to confirm I'm not being too weird haha

10 years of bartending in the Midwest - totally normal and probably accounts for a 1/3 of drink orders on an average night.

Once I ordered a very expensive whiskey (for me) and a diet coke (not for me) and the bartender was about to pour the $50 shot into the diet coke before I stopped him. Didn't even bat an eye.

Nobody cares what you order

Yes, it is quite normal. I do it all the time.

Jack and Diet is my go-to drink. I get some weird looks, but mostly because people don't expect a middle-aged woman to order that. I have learned over the past few years to say "Jack and DIET" (no mention of Coke), because otherwise people mishear me and bring a Jack and regular Coke.

That's how I order, too. "Rum and DIET."

I used to bartend... absolutely a normal request lol

Totally not weird. I've been bartending in the Northeast US for 15 years. Rum & diet is a common everyday order.

I've ordered vodka diet cokes in some pretty odd places without getting a second look.

I do all the time.

I once had a bartender in Australia give me a hard time about ordering a rum and coke once. He insisted that "Yanks don't drink rum." I said, "This one does." and reiterated that I would like a Bundy and Coke. This guy actually argued with me!

It's probably one of the drinks I make the most. Rum or vodka diets.

level 1

Where are you from? She was probably fascinated with your accent. So many of us love a foreign accent. I do.

vodka and diet or rum and diet are two of the most common drinks out there. time for a healthy breakfast babyyyyyyyyy!!!

level 1

If you're doing keto though I thought rum was on the bad list due to residual unfermented sugar

level 2

Honestly had no idea, I thought all pure spirits were ok! I'll look into it, thanks.

level 2

Depends on the rum. Kraken is 0 carb.

level 2

It's been in addressed in another reply, but dark, light, gold, or anejo rum has no residual sugars because it's distilled. Spiced or flavored rum, however, often have a lot of added sugar.

As long as the bottle says 40 proof you should be fine.

Rum and diet and Jack and diet are pretty common orders.

I'd frankly look askance at a grown-ass adult who orders sugary soda. I don't understand how people have not gotten the memo, especially when I see someone overweight ordering a full sugar Coke.
